young girl to work in the red light district. In her declining years she earned a crust
by mending clothes for visiting ship's crews.
Most Chinese ladies were known as 'Mary' on the ships, even though they found
the name impossible to pronounce. 'Mer-lee' was about the closest they could
manage.
